How we use categories on StoppingPower.Info

Written by admin on Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009 in StoppingPower.Info News.

Stoppingpower.Info has been a live site for the past two years, and consequently has seen a lot of change from the early days through now.  At first, we were wiki noobs, just happy to use something that would let us put our videos up on the web in a really fast and easy manner.  Frankly, that worked fine for the first year or so, until we started to put more content into the site and then the manner in which we categorized things began to get fuzzy.  Do we tag everything with 9mm with the 9mm category?  Isn’t that going to be a lot of stuff with the new gun reviews section we’re bringing online?

So the strategy has changed a bit with regard to categories (at least for now).  So, from now on, the 9mm page means all pages that have 9mm videos.  That’s it.  Yes, we could have made a 9mm videos category, but the amount of administrative headache that would be at this point is more than we want to inflict on ourselves and our users.

Moving our videos over to Blip.TV

Written by admin on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 in StoppingPower.Info News.

While I  use TubeMogul to handle video distribution, the vidoes that are linked direction from www.stoppingpower.info have been typically linked to Revver.com — up until now.  As a fairly small site, we’ve experienced modest growth over the past two years, and Revver was decent for generating some income from the ads they’d place (overlay) into our videos.  However, while it’s not enough to live the high life, we do actually like to get paid.  Revver has fallen off the wagon in the past 6 months and has issued one payment in that time.  The amount they owe us isn’t that big, and frankly we’ll keep doing what we’re doing because we love it, but it’s just the principle of the thing.

The majority of views for stoppingpower.info videos come from YouTube anyway, and that’s fine by us.  We just really want to put out quality information that people find useful.  With that in mind, we’re shifting to Blip.TV for the videos embedded directly on the site, as they have the chance that we might actually receive a check from them at some point.  So far, Blip.TV presents a vibrant, interesting community with new features being added.  Revver seems to primarily seem like a dying animal that doesn’t know it’s on its last legs.  To confirm it, just spend some time on the Revver forums and see all the complaints that people have regarding payment and service.  It’s really too bad, because it was nice for a bit, and from their posts, it would seem like some of the people actually replying on the forums actually care.  However, actions speak louder than words, and payments have stopped for all intents and purposes.

That’s fine, we’re just going to vote with our feet.  If you have any comments about Blip.TV usage on StopppingPower.Info just contact me.
