The .30-06 Springfield (pronounced thirty aught six) actually got its start in 1903. The .30-03 was quickly found to be inadequate. The improved .30-06 had a shorter casing and was able to shoot spitzer bullets. The round was the standard of the US military until the 60′s when the .308 became, and has remained, the standard.

.30-06 is a very versatile round able to shoot bullets ranging in size from 110gr. to 220gr.

Pros

Typically any gun that can shoot .357 Magnum, can shoot .38 Special

.38 Special is usually cheaper to shoot.

.38 Special is a lot easier on the recoil than a .357 Magnum, which generally makes it easier to consider for people that are recoil adverse (like my wife).

All the pros of a Revolver

Cons

You won’t easily find it in an Automatic Pistol , so you’re stuck with a Revolver. Now typically you’re talking about a 6 shot Revolver (by far the most common Revolver configuration), but there are 7 and 8 shot versions out there.

The 357 Magnum is useful in that ”’most”’ revolvers that can handle it, also can handle the cut down, less recoil inducing .38 Special cartridge. When in doubt ”’follow the manufacturers manual and directions”’.
